General Games / FINAL FANTASY 5 AND 6 GOING TO THE GBA!!!
« on: September 30, 2005, 05:02:43 pm »
Background Information:
Final Fantasy I has been ported to the GBA.
Final Fantasy II has been ported to the GBA.
Final Fantasy III is being ported to the DS.
Final Fantasy IV is being ported to the GBA.

September 30, 2005 - Square Enix may have shifted its portable gaming focus to the DS, but Game Boy Advance (and Micro) owners aren't being left out in the cold. Reports out of Japan indicate that the company will be bringing Final Fantasy IV (known in America as Final Fantasy II) to the system with updated visuals and gameplay systems. We currently know of just one of the improvements: character faces appear in text windows during dialogue.

FFIV may be just the first in a number of Final Fantasy revivals. Square Enix refers to the port as the first entry in the "Final Fantasy Series Port Project." Could FFV and FFVI also be set for revival?

Being the first entry in the "Port Project", that only leaves V and VI to be ported!  And Final Fantasy V and VI were superior to all the Final Fantasy's before and after them on all consoles!  Square Enix may yet come back to Nintendo next gen...

So, predictions on his speech?  Revolution controller?

Personally, I like the idea at http://revolutionagain.ytmnd.com/ of a detachable face-button place, but I want a bigger D-pad... the shoulder triggers are nice too, as well as the tracking ball.

General / FINAL FANTASY VII ADVENT CHILDREN IS AWESOME!!!

Just saw the movie today.  It's a great movie, better than The Spirits Within, even though it creates more plot holes than it ought to..

General Music / Machinae Supremacy: Best Band EVER!
« on: September 10, 2005, 06:16:32 pm »
http://www.machinaesupremacy.com/

On their site, you can download a sh*tload of music.  (29 songs to be exact.)  They make metal music, some bgm/vgm, some mainstream.  Black Mages and the Dracula Battle Perfect selections are like Justin Timberlake compared to Machinae Supremacy! ;)

You can find two of their songs (both downloadable) in the DDRMAX/Stepmania-ripoff In The Groove, and the entire soundtrack of the PC game Jets'N'Guns is composed by them.

BTW, this "game" merely has a few bonus movies and only has a few maps. There's no engine in this game, no code, no nothing.

I officially decree that there are now an extra 22,000 games on the PC.

.....no hard drive standard, backwards compatibility not standard, HiDef not standard, weekday Live play not standard, wireless controllers not standard.... WTF.

So, 20gb hard drive for $100??!  I can buy a f.cking 300gb hard drive for $110.  Launch titles will be $60.  Wireless controllers are $50.  Nonwireless controllers are $40.  64mb memory cards (1019 blocks) are $40.  The RECHARGE UNIT FOR WIRELESS CONTROLLERS IS $20.  The HIGH DEFINITION CABLES ARE $40.  This is complete BS.

My estimate of next gen:

Nintendo, first place with Revolution launching at $199.  Microsoft in second place, with the "real" Xbox 360 launching at $399.  Sony in last place, with the PS3 launching at $699.

General Games / Next-Gen Console Purchase Poll v2.0
« on: August 12, 2005, 07:19:23 pm »
Upon the release of new info on the next generation consoles, I felt it was necessary to recreate the old poll and require everyone to re-read the new facts and re-vote.  You'll be surprised.

Nintendo Revolution:
-Disc drive plays 12cm Revolution discs and 3in GameCube discs
-Smallest console and least power consuming
-Wireless controllers for Revolution (has four controller ports for GameCube controllers)
-Nintendo WiFi, free of charge and "better than Xbox Live", WiFi ready out of the box
-Nintendo will release a USB 2.0 device that lets you transfer your computer's wired broadband connection wirelessly to the Revolution and DS

General Music / System of a Down - Mezmerize (Explicit Lyrics) 2005
« on: August 11, 2005, 08:37:57 pm »
The new SoaD CD is AWESOME!  The below is a review I posted on a music forum.  And yeah, it's the first review I've ever written.

System of a Down - Mezmerize

Note for past fans:  Mezmerize is not your typical System of a Down album.  Daron Malakian, the guitarist, now sings along with Serj.  Daron generally sings an octave higher than Serj in a somewhat generic way, while Serj retains his unique style.  The album rocks hard like past System of a Down records, but this every song is of high quality, unlike the disasters of Steal This Album and Toxicity.

For newcommers to System of a Down, let's just say they're a nu-metal band which usually sings songs with political messages.

01. Soldier Side - Intro [1:03]
What can I say?  It's a soft, peaceful and somewhat beautiful intro featuring the vocals of Daron Malakian.

02. B.Y.O.B. [4:15]
This was their first radio single on this album.  This song introduced us to the new vocals of guitarist Daron Malakian mixed with the former unique vocals of Serj Tankian.  The song starts with a riff, goes into fast paced verses, and features a slow, pop-like chorus.  The end of the song is almost an entirely different song due to a tempo change in mid-chorus, but it all works.  The energy, anti-war (and anti-Bush) lyrics (as usual), and melody are great in this song.  I give it a 4.5/5.

03. Revenga [3:48]
The Chop Suey of Mezmerize:  vocals by Serj, extremely fast-paced verses and a slower chorus.  The melody and lyrics are great, and the tempo doesn't change too drastically to take away from anything.  The song talks about plotting revenge (obviously).  I give it a 5/5.

04. Cigaro [2:11]
...this is probably the most interesting song on the album.  Lyrics are.. interesting.. dirty.. sexual... Daron starts off with a line and Serj screams back a response.  The chorus is all Serj.  I give it a 4.5/5.

05. Radio/Video [4:09]
This song is a pure slam on the junk that currently litters the pop industry.  The song has an upbeat and catchy background during the verses, features the vocals of Daron during the verses, and has a single line repeated during the chorus by Serj.  I give it a 4.5/5.

06. This Cocaine Makes Me Feel Like I'm on This Song [2:08]
Serj sings extremely fast during the verses about how there's nothing wrong with him and there's something wrong with you.  That is, unfortunately, the highlight of the song.  The pre-chorus is utterly strange, with an extremely high-pitched portion, while the chorus is like the verses but slower.  After the chorus, the pre-chorus plays again, then we go to the second verse.  The lyrics are pretty good, but the musical presentation in this song is disappointing.  I give it a 3/5.

07. Violent Pornography [3:31]
This song is similar to the previous track, except both Serj and Daron sing quickly during the verses and the pre-chorus and chorus rock.  The bridge is more melodic than the rest of the song, but remains powerful.  The entire song is about how everybody sucks and about crap on the TV.  I give it a 4.5/5.

08. Question! [3:20]
This is a great track.  The song starts with soft accoustic guitar, then goes to an electric riff, then goes back to soft accoustic with soft melodic lyrics.  The melodic and slower chorus goes back to electronic with louder vocals and retains the past tempo.  The bridge is typical SoaD screaming, and the whole song altogether works perfectly.  I give it a 5/5.

09. Sad Statue [3:26]
Another awesome song.  The beginning and the verses are all hard-rocking with somewhat high-pitched and odd-paced melodic lyrics.  The pre-chorus rocks just as hard as the verses, while the chorus has no riffs and has softer and slower melodic lyrics about a sad Statue of Liberty.  The bridge is purely guitar, and ends with a slower and more majestic chorus.  I give it a 5/5.

10. Old School Hollywood [2:57]
This song is great.  The verses start with Daron saying something, then having a robot-like voice respond.  Serj basically just says Old School Hollywood with a few word changes the whole chorus.  The bridge is much calmer with the same melody of the verses, then goes back to guitar riffs and the chorus.  I give it a 5/5.

11. Lost in Hollywood [5:21]
Haha!  This song actually made my laugh and fall out of my chair.  It's a soft song sung purely by Daron.  The first half starts with a bunch of verses about how Hollywood was bad, then goes to a hilarious line for a chorus.  After that, there's hymming in the background by Daron and Serj, and then another chorus.  An example of one of the chorus' is "All you maggots smoking fags out there on Sunset Boulevard."  Overall, this song could well be the best song on the album, even though its far from typical SoaD.  I give it a 5/5.

Overall, I rate this album 5/5.  It was well worth a purchase of $11.99 at Best Buy, and is basically All Killer No Filler.

About myTPH / Tutorial to using BitTorrent
« on: July 04, 2005, 03:33:46 pm »
BitTorrent is a special peer-to-peer filesharing program.  Unlike other P2P clients like Kazaa, Shareaza, and Limewire, BitTorrent does not have a search engine.  You download files through BitTorrent by loading Torrent files.  These files contain the filenames and special hashes for the files you want to download, as well as the tracker from which the Torrent runs.  Trackers track all activity on a Torrent so your client knows where to download from and where to upload to.

BitTorrent, like most other P2P networks, has an official client and many unofficial clients.  You can find the official BitTorrent client at http://www.bittorrent.com/.  If you are new to BitTorrent (why else would you be reading this guide? ;)), I strongly recommend you use the official client.  The client I use for Torrents is Azureus, located at http://azureus.sourceforge.net/download.php.  This client is much more customizable than the official client, but also requires more configuration and is not for beginners.

When you open a Torrent using your client, you will be asked where you want to download to.  If the Torrent is downloading a single file, you will be asked to save the file in a directory.  If the Torrent is downloading a folder, like the torrents on this site, you will be asked where to save the directory to.

After setting the download location, the Torrent will start up.  It will try to connect to the Tracker and then try to download from the seeders.  Once you download a portion of the files, you will begin to seed to other people.  Note that you can not properly use any files downloaded through Torrents until after the download finishes.  It's common courtesy to leave your Torrent open after your download finishes so you can seed to other people, and you should always seed more than you leech.  You should also remember that if you limit your upload speed, your download speed will also be proportionally limited, regardless of how you limit your uploads.

Hopefully this will clear up any and all problems you have about Torrents.

Music / Rockman & Forte / Mega Man & Bass
« on: July 03, 2005, 11:24:56 am »
Protoman, you have Rockman & Forte for SNES, right?  IIRC, Coldman, Pirateman, and Tenguman are the only stages that have unique intros, and in Pirate and Tengu's cases it's just a few beats of drums.  I'm almost done with my Mega Man & Bass (GBA) line-in recording, so I was just wondering how you'd done on your SNES recording...

Music / Anyone wanna send me Mega Man & Bass for GBA? :)
« on: June 22, 2005, 02:08:12 pm »
Well, I bought a GBA SP for cheap, and I thought I might record some stuff.  I tried to stake a claim to cheap copies of games on eBay, but I always got outbid :(.  If anyone wants to send me games (like the guy who had two copies of MMB), you're welcome! :)

First though, I have to get my hands on a headphone adapter, which hopefully no one else will bid on at eBay...
