Title: Questions about Line-in...ing
Post by: Lazlo Falconi on May 27, 2005, 10:25:53 pm
Anyway, I just got my F-ZERO cart today, so I thought that to commemerate it, I'd do a line-in of it. The first question, of course, is what do I use to record from the Line-in plug? Do I use Sound Recorder? Secondly, how do I convert .WAV into .mp3? If there's one program that does this, could someone point me in the direction? Thanks in advance (or not) and look for thos recordings when I have time to get them all converted and whatnot.

F-Zero's for SNES, right?  If so, you need to get a Nintendo A/V cable, not the SNES RF adapter.  N A/V cables are included with N64s and GCs, so you should have one.  Then, you need to buy a Y-adapter that accepts two audio cords and plugs into a normal-headphone-sized port.  Then you need a professional sound editor.  GoldWave is the best free ap.  The details will come later ;)

I already have a Y adapter, don't know where I got it, but I've been using it for my GCN's speakers because my T.V. only works in mono. So I'll grab GoldWave (Google'd (http://www.google.com/search?q=GoldWave&sourceid=mozilla-search&start=0&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official)) and see what I can do.

Edit'd: From the screenshots it looks pretty easy to work with, so I'll download it and set my SNES up down here.
Edit Again: Ok, I did a line-in of the title theme, but I wasn't sure of anything, so I used default settings (44100Hz 128kbps) The total file is 57.620 seconds long, what do you think?
Now I realize this isn't the best song in the world, and it probably shouldn't be as long as it is because it's so repetitive, but was the quality ok?
One more time... Here's also Mute City, same settings but I'm not oging to post the time because I forgot to check. You'll figure itout if you want to know.

This one is Mute City. (http://rapidshare.de/files/2023398/F-ZERO_Mute_City_I.mp3.html)

It's generally a rule that you only record in lossless wave or AIFF... then encode to lossless compression or lossy compression later.

Ok, I'll do that, I've gotta redo the entire Mute City theme anyway, as the begining is really messed up.

Yeah, it seems to be missing the very first second.  Can't wait 'till you're done!  F-Zero's one of my favorite racing games!  How'd you manage to get rid of the sounds though?  I don't think there was ever a Sound Test mode in F-Zero.

If you pause it you get no sounds, but the music is still there. As for the title screen music, I just went into the Records screen so that I wouldn't get the demo.

I'll do as good as I can, and try not to butcher it up too much ;)

When you pause, does the music dim like in Mega Man X?

Err... About that. I don't think I'll be able to do it. Recently, for reasons that are beyond me, my computer won't record right... I'll try again some time later.

Well, I tried it again, and my computer didn't mess it up this time, however, I can't cut the intro up right...

It sounds only a little distorted.  Sounds nice anyway.  Good job.  By the way, I'd upload Guardian Heroes, cause the music in that game ROCKS, but I don't think Protoman likes CD Rips anymore, since I just got it off the CD itself.

Protoman just doesn't want to host CD rips because they're "common" and otherwise waste the bandwidth...

and, most importantly, there's much less of a chance of my ass getting sued if there are no cd rips up.
