Erm... I tried running DESCENT -VFX (which probably won't mean a thing to any of you, except Swift, but even then, probably not) and my computer.. somethinged. Video drivers, I suppose... Oh well, here's a screenshot. It was pretty badass.

I never ran Descent -VFX. Just descentr.exe and setup.exe. That's all, really. Never even descent-help.
Did you run that in command prompt, windows explorer, or DOSbox? If you're running in safe mode now, then I suppose restart your comp and run in normal mode, then mess with your resolution options. I can't help much with win XP, man. Sorry.
