Yeah, I saw the feedback. However, I *swear* I thought I'd been to a site called protoman.com before. However, what I recall is quite different, so I'm not really sure if it was a similar site name, or if you've done an overhaul.

quite a few overhauls of the site have been done since its inception in 1996 ... i would say at least five or six major ones. does what you remember look like this, this, this or this? if so, then i think we may have a winner. ;)

I've never had a Nomad, so  I have no idea how hard it is to mod it for playing foreign games. I always just hook up a Game Genie to my Genesis and use a code to by pass the lockout.

it's basically just hooking up the japanese jumper to the mode button. instead of emulating a 3-button controller, the mode button changes the language setting. though any game genie code you could supply would be of great use if i can't get the mod to work or if i want to play the game in any of my other genesises for whatever reason (e.g. to record a speed run).

It's interesting to note the differences in this game and their US NES counterparts. Sometimes a few enemies will be added, and some weapons don't quite work the same way....

interesting story about that. i played wily wars back in 1995 on the sega channel and, to make a long story short, i became a mega man fan when i never would have been otherwise (i was a devout sega fanatic at the time. you know, having the sega channel and all).

anyway, as i began to collect nintendo systems and mega man games, i noticed some of those differences ... one of the big ones was whether a metool in top man's stage would make it to a small platform or would fall to the ground in front of you. obviously what to do in that situation would be different (either wait and shoot or run under the platform, jump and shoot), but i could never remember which happened in which game, so i would either run straight into the metool or stand around like an idiot while it did nothing threatening.

another one i remember is just before the "guts-dozer" or whatever in wily's castle in mm2. the cannon enemies with legs you see just before the boss are safe to run right up to in either the wily wars or in the original, but in the other version, you have to jump in order for their shots to miss you. of course, i can't remember which is which for that one, either. ;P

EDIT: disregard about the game genie codes; i've found them myself. thanks for the heads up, though!

oh my god. you must have seen my feedback on ebay.

what's up, dude; i just got your game here today. there was a problem with rewiring the mode button on my nomad to an english/japanese switch, but that should be cleared up tomorrow, so i will hopefully be able to start recording the music then.

sometime when i get more time (and i'm less sleep deprived) i'll tell the story of why that one particular rockman game is more important than all others to me and to this site (and to all the sites that came later, as well, i guess!).

anyway, way to take care of your game; i was really impressed with the condition the box and the manual were in. just like i bought it used in japan, and that is about the best compliment one could give! time will tell if i find something to do with the manual besides make avatars out of the pictures. ;P

Comix / Comic viewing
« on: February 08, 2005, 02:07:32 am »
dude, you've got me there. i have no idea why that is happening. when i try it in ie 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158 i am able to resize the window without the comix resizing, and when i resize it to be too small for the comic image, scroll bar(s) appear.

what version of ie are you using? to find out, go to help: about internet explorer.

an undoable modification (i.e. a tiny piece of silly putty over the contact in question, for example) would render this information useful to me. i wonder if i could possibly learn anything by reading about snes cartridge pinouts in faqs ...

You probably have what the outsiders call 'lives'.

HAHAHAHA

...

no i don't, actually. >_> i go to class maybe an hour or three every day and that's about the extent of it. every other second is spent either on tph, on m2k2 or on sda ... that may change someday, who knows, but for now, my work is enough for me.

and yes, it has always been a desire of mine to record iii-v (actually would re-record i and ii at the same time to meet current quality standards). i even bought the games way back and everything, just never got around to it. stay tuned.

hmm isn't power fighters just an expanded version of power battle? have to ask m.midget for his expertise on that one.

edit: oops. meant "power battle" with the second one.

About myTPH / How exactly do you record the songs?
« on: February 06, 2005, 01:20:08 am »
for the genesis stuff, i use my nomad running on battery power (least noise of any genesis unit) and record using an 1/8" stereo miniplug male to 1/8" stereo miniplug male cable (the same thing on both ends) which plugs into my sound card. i use cool edit pro 2.0 to record, denoise (there is still some noticeable noise in the recording, even though it's from a nomad) and then normalize it (to make sure it's nice and loud). mp3 encoding is done on my mac with itunes, but i imagine itunes for windows would behave exactly the same way in that regard.

stuff from the snes, saturn etc uses the cable or adapter m.midget was talking about that goes from rca audio (red and white) to 1/8" stereo miniplug.

most of the stuff in the most recent update that wasn't just ripped from cd (so the rockman complete works music) probably involves the most complicated process of all. there is a set of utilites called psxvideo, and in that set of utilities is a program called xaex.exe (try saying that five times fast). this program is able to talk directly to your cd-rom hardware to copy the normally off-limits bgm.xa file off of the game disc onto your hard drive. the reason it has to do this is because the .xa file is written in what's called mode 2, or "xa" (extended architecture) format. if windows or os x or whatever tries to copy the file, it can't do it, because it's expecting it to be a mode 1 file. the catch to all this is that you have to have actual dos running on your computer, not windows nt or otherwise emulated dos. this means you need windows 3.1, 95 or 98 in order to use the program. nt, 2000 and xp just won't work.

anyway, once you have the file off, you can use some of the other utilities in the package to extract the waveforms inside the xa file. usually the xas are eight tracks (numbered 0-7), so eight different wave files pop out. then it's time to use cool edit pro to separate the different songs inside each track. sometimes there is only one song per track, but even then the song will go on for like six or seven minutes, and get really boring, so i make it a policy to start a 10 second fade at the second repeat (so the third iteration) of every song. you will notice that this rule applies for virtually all of the newer-sounding stuff on the site.

hope that answers your question.
